Jon says that no tweeter should ever go directly into your ear. He keeps the tweeters of his PMC’s way above his head.

Set up different stations in your studio where you can switch into different mental modes, like writing, producing, mixing, etc.

Change your posture when you are doing different tasks. Sitting, standing, stretching.

  • Get yourself a desk that transitions between sitting/standing.

It takes a lot of confidence to be simple in songwriting, arranging, producing, or mixing.

Confidence means not being afraid to be wrong.

Rick Rubin on working with young vs. new bands:

  • The older artists are more likely to experiment and try new ideas because they have the confidence of age. A young artist/band doesn’t really know who they are because they don’t have a voice yet.

When you are hired for a job it is your time to have confidence in yourself and understand that you are being hired for your taste and your skills.

Confidence comes from the experience of going through the creative process and knowing that you’re going to do 90% bad stuff.

  • The answer to bad songs is to write more songs.

  • Write 2-3 songs a day for 5 years. At the end of this you will be a good songwriter.

Peer review:

  • Get reactions from people in your field.

Becoming a better person will inform how people react to you and how you create and how you get hired.
