Mixing Vocals: Pt 2

Parallel Compression:

With any duplicate version of something you’re going to mess with phase, so take care that you’re not thinning out your vocals.

9/10 times Jon does not have a parallel vocal compressor.

Another version of parallel processing on plugins is the mix knob.

  • Jon almost never blends an effect with the mix knob.

When Jon does do parallel processing it is by duplicating the track. This allows him to have an entire channel dedicated to just the dry vocal.

  • This also allows him more flexibility to send just the dry vocal to an effects channel.

Clip Gain:

Even and dynamic vocal. Just balance it by ear.

Jon will also adjust the EQ independently for any phrase, word, or syllable that may need it. He does this by using the Option+6 menu (in Pro Tools) to adjust each clip’s EQ.

Jon will automate up saturation on certain words to match texture if the singer steps back from the mic momentarily.

———

Import your own vocal chain for each mix.
- Your EQ, saturator, etc.

————

Jon doesn’t go more than 1-2dB on the Attack when transient shaping a vocal. If you have to go more than that it’s not your fault.

———

Young Thug is Matt’s fav contemporary vocalist.

Rosalia is Jon’s favorite.

  • She’s vulnerable, exciting, energetic, dynamic, subtle

He’s also into Mereba.

————

Jon doesn’t normally do tuning. Only a subtle amount if something needs it.
